The University of Chicago Celtic Society

Who are we?

The University of Chicago Celtic Society (est. 1997) is an umbrella organization for university students and staff interested in the culture, history and especially languages of the Celtic nations.

Anyone who's ever tried to learn a language on their own will tell you that it's difficult.  Learning a Celtic language is especially hard--teachers, textbooks, and learning materials are hard to come by, and Celtic languages have unique features not found in the more familiar languages.  Our goal is to promote study of the Celtic languages and assist learners by

It is our hope that by working together we can increase our appreciation of the richness and uniqueness of the Celtic languages, cultures, and literature.

Our Subgroups

The Celtic Society actually consists of a number of quasi-independent subgroups, focusing on particular aspects of the Celtic traditions.  These subgroups are the heart of the Celtic Society, and sponsor the bulk of our activities.  Currently subgroups exist for the four living Celtic languages (Irish, Breton, Scottish Gaelic, and Welsh.)  We welcome the formation of new subgroups as well--for instance, groups dedicated to other Celtic languages (eg. Manx, Cornish, Old Irish), or to Celtic music, mythology, or dance.  If you would like to start a subgroup, please contact us!
